The 117.7-km Kanpur-Kabrai access-controlled highway, recently approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), is expected to significantly enhance freight movement, industrial connectivity and agricultural market access across Bundelkhand. The greenfield project, to be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹7,145 crore.

Part of the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor, the new highway is expected to reduce travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai from around 3.5 hours to nearly 1.5 hours, improving freight efficiency and lowering logistics costs.

The corridor will provide a high-speed, access-controlled route linking the Kabrai mining belt—one of North India’s major sources of aggregates and construction materials—with key industrial and urban centres, including Kanpur and Bhopal. Faster transportation of minerals is expected to reduce fuel consumption, improve vehicle turnaround times and ease congestion on existing highways, strengthening supply chain reliability and connectivity with logistics infrastructure planned under the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

The highway is also expected to improve market access for farmers across Bundelkhand by enabling quicker transportation of agricultural produce to mandis, processing units and consumption centres. Reduced transit time is likely to minimise post-harvest losses, particularly for perishable commodities, while lowering transportation costs. Improved connectivity will also facilitate the movement of seeds, fertilisers, farm equipment and other agricultural inputs, supporting farm productivity and rural economic growth.

The government said the project will strengthen connectivity between mining regions, industrial clusters and agricultural hinterlands with major economic centres, creating opportunities for investment, employment and business development while supporting long-term industrial and agricultural growth in Central India.
