The Karnataka Maritime Board is looking to expand public-private partnerships (PPPs) to strengthen the state’s maritime infrastructure and attract greater private investment into the sector.

The initiative is aimed at improving port infrastructure, cargo-handling facilities and related maritime services while supporting the development of Karnataka’s coastal economy. The state has a long coastline and several ports that can play a larger role in supporting trade and industrial activity.

Under the PPP approach, private-sector participation is expected to help mobilise investment, introduce modern technologies and improve operational efficiency across maritime projects. The model could also support the development of new port-related facilities and upgrades to existing infrastructure.

Karnataka is seeking to improve connectivity between its ports and major industrial and commercial centres. Better maritime infrastructure could help exporters and importers access international markets more efficiently while strengthening the state’s logistics network.

The push for private investment comes as India continues to focus on expanding port capacity and improving multimodal connectivity under its broader maritime-development programmes. Karnataka’s coastal infrastructure is expected to gain importance as trade volumes and industrial activity increase.

The Karnataka Maritime Board is expected to identify suitable projects for private participation and work with investors and industry stakeholders to accelerate their development.

Greater private-sector involvement could help Karnataka enhance port capacity, improve cargo-handling capabilities and strengthen its position in India’s maritime trade network.
