The Kochi Water Metro, a pioneering urban water transport system, is set for a major expansion under Phase II, extending its services beyond the city’s boundaries. Authorities are evaluating three new corridors—Kumbalam to Alappuzha, Aluva to Nedumbassery, and Paravur to Kodungallur—as part of this ambitious project.
Following the successful rollout of Phase I in April 2023, which introduced 15 routes connecting 38 terminals across 10 island communities, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has directed Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) to explore expanding the network to other parts of Kerala and India. In response, KMRL has formed an internal committee to conduct a feasibility study for these routes.
Key proposals under consideration:
Kumbalam to Alappuzha (with a possible extension to Cherthala or Vaikom in Kottayam). Aluva to Nedumbassery to enhance connectivity to Kochi airport. Paravur to Kodungallur, further integrating Kerala’s inland water transport. Beyond Kerala, KWML is assessing the feasibility of introducing Water Metro services in Kollam and major cities across India, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Mangaluru, Ayodhya, Dhubri, Goa, Kolkata, Patna, Prayagraj, Srinagar, Varanasi, Mumbai, and Vasai.
The expansion of the Kochi Water Metro marks a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, reinforcing the growing demand for ecofriendly water transport solutions. With Indian cities increasingly prioritising multi-modal connectivity, the Water Metro model could drive investments in waterway infrastructure, renewable energy-powered vessels, and smart transport technologies. As a scalable, low-emission transit system, this initiative could serve as a blueprint for other coastal and riverine cities, redefining public transportation across India.
