Lufthansa Cargo will expand its presence in North America with the launch of a new freighter service and an increase in bellyhold frequencies to other destinations.

The Frankfurt-hubbed freighter operator will launch a Boeing 777 freighter service to the Mexican city of Monterrey on June 3, with bookings now available.

The service rotation heads from Frankfurt (FRA) to Mexico City (NLU) and then onwards to Monterrey International Airport (MTY) and back to Frankfurt.

Flights will operate on a Monday and Lufthansa reckoned the service would be of interest to automotive suppliers, electronics providers, and customers transporting medical products.

Ashwin Bhat, chief executive of Lufthansa Cargo, said: “We are pleased to add Monterrey as a further station to our freighter network for our customers.

“Connecting the business and industrial city of Monterrey with the European market as the first European cargo airline underscores our strategic growth into new markets.

“With this new addition, Lufthansa Cargo will serve North America with up to 33 freighter frequencies weekly and South America with up to four frequencies weekly in addition to the belly flights.”

Elsewhere, the airline will also a 777F freighter stop in Dubai (DWC) on its way from Shanghai to Frankfurt.

Lufthansa Cargo added that it would also expand its belly network to North America this summer through the summer schedules of its sister airlines.

This will include direct connections by Lufthansa Airlines from Frankfurt to Minneapolis and to Raleigh-Durham; Austrian Airlines will fly directly from Vienna to Los Angeles and Boston; and Discover Airlines will fly from Frankfurt to Anchorage and to Halifax in Canada during the summer.

From Munich, flights have been added to Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver.

Elsewhere, belly capacity is being added from Brussels to Nairobi and Kigali by Brussels Airlines; from Munich to Trondheim in Norway, Nantes in France, Oulu in Finland, and Chișinău in Moldova.

Last week, the carrier added a flight to Riga as part of its short- medium-haul freighter network operated by its Airbus A321 freighters.
