Maersk has started operations at the new APM Terminals Suape facility in Pernambuco, Brazil, strengthening its container network and improving connectivity for cargo moving to and from the country’s Northeast.
From September 1, Maersk began using the new terminal through its Aliança services. The move brings regular carrier operations to the newly developed facility at the Port of Suape.
New Gateway for Northeast Brazil
APM Terminals Suape has been developed as a major new container gateway for the region. The facility has an initial annual handling capacity of up to 400,000 TEUs and is designed to increase the container-handling capacity of the wider Suape port complex by around 55%.
The terminal is expected to improve connections between Pernambuco and major domestic and international markets, supporting trade flows across Brazil’s Northeast.
Fully Electrified Facility
The new terminal has been developed with a strong focus on electrification and digitalisation. APM Terminals describes it as Brazil’s first fully electrified container terminal.
The facility uses electric cargo-handling equipment and incorporates automated and digitally enabled processes designed to improve operational efficiency, safety and reliability.
The terminal includes ship-to-shore cranes, electric yard equipment, automated gates and infrastructure for refrigerated containers, supporting a broad range of containerised cargo.
Maersk Maintains Aliança Services
Maersk said customers will continue to be served through its Aliança Services as operations transition to the new terminal.
The move is intended to strengthen logistics efficiency and expand connectivity between Northeast Brazil and other parts of the country. Maersk said the new infrastructure will provide greater agility, security and reliability for its operations.
Investment Supports Regional Trade
APM Terminals has invested around €300 million in the Suape project. The terminal occupies approximately 50 hectares and forms part of Maersk’s wider investment programme in Brazilian port infrastructure.
The facility’s location is expected to enhance Suape’s role as a gateway for containerised imports and exports from Pernambuco and neighbouring states.
With Maersk now operating through the new terminal, Suape enters a new phase of development aimed at increasing capacity, improving service reliability and supporting the continued growth of container trade in Northeast Brazil.
