Maersk has confirmed an order for 26 new container ships, each with a capacity of 18,600 TEU, as the Danish carrier moves to expand and renew its fleet.
The vessels will add substantial capacity to Maersk’s global network and are expected to support the company’s long-term fleet strategy. The order comes as major container lines continue investing in new-generation ships to replace older tonnage and improve fleet efficiency.
The 18,600-TEU vessels are designed for high-volume international trades, where larger ships can provide economies of scale. Their deployment will allow Maersk to adjust capacity across major east-west routes in line with changing cargo demand and network requirements.
Fleet renewal is also becoming increasingly important as shipping companies work to meet stricter environmental requirements. Newer vessels generally offer improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared with older ships, while potentially providing greater flexibility in adopting lower-carbon fuels and technologies.
The order forms part of Maersk’s broader fleet investment programme as the carrier prepares for changing global trade patterns and the continued evolution of its shipping network.
The additional ships will significantly increase Maersk’s future fleet capacity once delivered, while supporting the company’s efforts to maintain a modern and efficient container fleet.
