Maharashtra has reinforced its position as India’s leading pharmaceutical export hub, recording pharmaceutical exports worth USD 5.94 billion during FY2025-26 and accounting for 19% of the country’s total pharma exports, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced. The achievement underscores the state’s pivotal role in driving India’s rapidly expanding pharmaceutical industry and strengthening its presence in global healthcare markets.
According to the minister, Maharashtra’s robust export performance reflects the state’s well-established pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem, supported by a strong network of research institutions, production facilities, skilled workforce, and logistics infrastructure. The state is home to several leading pharmaceutical companies that manufacture a wide range of generic medicines, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), vaccines, biosimilars, and specialty drugs for international markets.
The United States, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and several Asian countries continue to be key destinations for pharmaceutical exports from Maharashtra. Demand for affordable, high-quality generic medicines, coupled with India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of healthcare products, has contributed significantly to the state’s export growth.
Piyush Goyal said the performance aligns with the government’s broader objective of making India a global pharmaceutical manufacturing powerhouse. Initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, bulk drug parks, and efforts to improve ease of doing business have encouraged investments in pharmaceutical manufacturing and enhanced export competitiveness.
Maharashtra’s strong logistics network, including major ports such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mumbai Port, along with extensive road, rail, and air cargo connectivity, has further strengthened the state’s ability to serve global markets efficiently. The presence of pharmaceutical clusters in Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, and other industrial centres has also supported production capacity and export growth.
Industry experts believe sustained investments in research and development, regulatory compliance, digital manufacturing, and innovation will enable Maharashtra to maintain its leadership in pharmaceutical exports. As global demand for quality medicines continues to rise, the state is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping India achieve its long-term goal of becoming one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical exporters.
