The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has launched construction on a SAR 689 million ($183.7 million) logistics corridor linking Jeddah Islamic Port to the Al Khomra Logistics Zone.
The aim is to streamline freight movement and reduce congestion in the city’s transport network.
The foundation stone was laid by Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the General Authority for Ports (Mawani).
The event was attended by Eng. Sulaiman Al-Mazrou, Chairman of Mawani, along with other government and industry representatives.
The project includes a 17-kilometre corridor with two lanes in each direction and 12 bridges , connecting the port directly to the logistics zone without the need for trucks to travel through the city centre.
According to the Ministry, the corridor is expected to improve the efficiency of freight traffic and increase Jeddah Islamic Port’s handling capacity by 10 per cent.
Officials said the corridor is part of a broader effort to separate heavy truck movements from general traffic, aiming to reduce congestion and improve road safety in the Jeddah area.
The project also includes infrastructure such as rainwater drainage systems, emergency access points, and maintenance routes
The development is aligned with the country’s National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services, which targets improved supply chain efficiency and aims to position Saudi Arabia as a logistics hub connecting three continents.
In addition to reducing truck congestion, the corridor is expected to support container and cargo movement between the port and the Al Khomra zone.
Authorities say it may also enable new investment opportunities and benefit carriers, importers, exporters, and logistics providers operating in the region.
In June, Mawani welcomed the launch of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)’s new Himalaya Express shipping service at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and Jubail Commercial Port.
