Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd has marked a major milestone in its international expansion strategy by acquiring a 51% stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC for ₹249.5 crore, in what is its first overseas acquisition.

The deal strengthens Mazagon Dock’s presence beyond India and is expected to enhance its shipbuilding and repair capabilities through access to Colombo Dockyard’s established infrastructure and regional client base in the Indian Ocean region.

With this majority stake, the Indian defence public sector undertaking is set to deepen its footprint in global shipbuilding markets, while also leveraging synergies in commercial and defence vessel construction.

Industry observers view the acquisition as a strategic step towards positioning Mazagon Dock as a more globally competitive shipbuilder, aligning with India’s broader push for maritime expansion and defence manufacturing growth.

The transaction also highlights increasing cross-border consolidation in the shipbuilding sector, as regional yards seek stronger capital backing and technical collaboration to meet rising demand for specialized vessels.
