Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is exploring plans to establish a large shipyard in Maharashtra as part of its long-term expansion strategy, according to the company’s chairman. The proposed project is aimed at boosting shipbuilding capacity and supporting rising domestic and international demand across the commercial and defence maritime sectors.
The chairman said the company is evaluating suitable locations and feasibility aspects for the mega shipyard, which could significantly enhance MDL’s production capabilities for larger vessels and complex marine projects. The expansion is also expected to strengthen India’s shipbuilding ecosystem and support the government’s maritime and defence manufacturing objectives.
MDL, one of India’s leading shipyards, currently builds naval warships, submarines, offshore platforms, and commercial vessels. The proposed facility could help the company diversify into larger ship categories and improve delivery capacity amid growing order pipelines.
Industry observers believe the project could generate substantial employment opportunities, attract ancillary industries, and reinforce Maharashtra’s position as a major maritime and industrial hub. The development also aligns with India’s broader push to expand indigenous shipbuilding and reduce dependence on foreign shipyards.
