Vizhinjam International Seaport has recorded a major operational milestone with MSC Loreto, one of the ultra-large container vessels in MSC’s fleet, handling an exchange of 17,262 TEUs during its recent call at the port.
Arriving from Singapore, the vessel’s high-volume operation highlights Vizhinjam’s growing capability to handle large container vessels and substantial cargo exchanges. The operation is among the highest-volume vessel calls reported at an Indian port.
The MSC Loreto is part of the large-capacity fleet deployed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) on international liner services. Its call at Vizhinjam demonstrates the port’s increasing integration with global mainline shipping networks and its emerging role as a transshipment hub on the Indian subcontinent.
The 17,262-TEU exchange required coordinated operations across vessel planning, quay-side handling, yard movements and terminal systems. Vizhinjam’s advanced automation and technology-enabled infrastructure supported the high-volume operation, alongside the terminal’s marine, engineering, operations and logistics teams.
The milestone comes as Vizhinjam continues to expand its vessel-handling and transshipment capabilities, leveraging its strategic location close to major international east-west shipping routes.
The successful handling of MSC Loreto further demonstrates the port’s ability to accommodate ultra-large container vessels and manage large-scale cargo operations as it strengthens its position in the international container shipping network.
