A new eco-friendly cement carrier for the Great Lakes is being built in the Netherlands.
Eureka Shipping expects delivery of the vessel in 2025, the report said. It will replace two older cement carriers.
“In line with our commitment to eco-friendly principles, our new cement carrier will significantly contribute to decarbonization,” said Kai Grotterud, managing director of Eureka Shipping. “It will drastically cut down emissions per metric tonne of cargo carried.”
The ship will have a diesel-electric propulsion system and fuel-efficient engines that can operate on biofuel, the report said. Other energy-saving measures include LED lighting and advanced cargo handling equipment. It will also be equipped to operate on shore power.
