Jawaharlal Nehru Port has introduced a series of relief measures to support exporters and maintain cargo flow as ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt key shipping routes.
The port authority has announced waivers and concessions on storage charges for export containers stranded due to cancelled or delayed sailings to Gulf destinations. The move is aimed at reducing the financial burden on exporters grappling with uncertainty in vessel schedules and transit timelines.
The initiative follows a broader directive from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which has urged ports across the country to implement coordinated strategies to minimise disruption. These include closer collaboration between port authorities, terminal operators, customs officials and shipping lines.
In addition to financial relief, Nhava Sheva is taking operational steps to ease congestion. The port is allocating additional yard space for container storage, streamlining documentation processes, and enhancing coordination among stakeholders to ensure faster movement of cargo once services resume.
The disruption in the Middle East has forced several global carriers to suspend or reroute services, leading to a shift in regional shipping patterns. As a result, Indian west coast ports—particularly Nhava Sheva—are witnessing an uptick in vessel calls, positioning them as alternative hubs for cargo diversion and transshipment.
Shipping lines are also reconfiguring their networks to maintain connectivity. The CMA CGM Group is planning a dedicated India–UAE shuttle service linking ports such as Nhava Sheva, Hazira and Mundra with Sohar and Fujairah. However, these services are expected to be limited in scope, with cargo largely restricted to UAE destinations due to customs constraints.
At the same time, rising operational risks have prompted carriers to impose emergency surcharges, adding to the cost pressures faced by exporters and importers.
As India’s busiest container gateway, Nhava Sheva plays a pivotal role in the country’s trade with the Middle East. The port’s proactive measures are expected to help stabilise supply chains and ensure continuity of trade flows during a period of heightened uncertainty in regional maritime logistics.
