Oriental Rail Infrastructure Ltd (ORIL), through its wholly owned subsidiary Oriental Foundry Pvt Ltd, has entered into a Technology Development Agreement with Russia-based United Wagon Company’s (UWC) design and engineering centre, VNICTT, to develop advanced freight rolling-stock solutions.
The collaboration will focus on the design and development of a 25-tonne axle-load bogie and a solid-bottom gondola car. VNICTT will be responsible for engineering design, preparation of technical documentation and providing technical support during testing.
Focus on higher freight capacity
The 25-tonne axle-load bogie is intended to allow railway wagons to carry higher payloads per wagon, supporting the growing demand for more efficient heavy-haul freight transportation in India. The higher axle-load capability could help improve freight productivity by enabling greater cargo movement with each train.
The second product under development, a solid-bottom gondola car, is aimed at expanding Oriental Rail’s portfolio of specialised freight wagons. Such wagons are suited to bulk cargo applications and could address evolving requirements across India’s freight transportation sector.
Technology partnership strengthens capabilities
The agreement gives Oriental Rail access to VNICTT’s specialised expertise in freight wagon and bogie engineering. The company said the partnership complements its existing capabilities across freight wagons, bogies, couplers, draft gears, springs and other railway components.
Oriental Rail said the collaboration will strengthen its technology-led product development and advanced rolling-stock capabilities as the Indian railway sector continues to modernise its freight fleet.
The company expects the new designs to offer potential benefits including higher payload capacity, improved operating efficiency and lower lifecycle maintenance requirements.
Supporting India’s freight-rail modernisation
The partnership comes as Indian Railways places increasing emphasis on improving freight capacity and encouraging greater private-sector participation and innovation in wagon design. Oriental Rail said the agreement will help it expand its presence in the freight railway segment and develop products tailored to the Indian market.
The company already has an RDSO-approved manufacturing platform and produces freight wagons and key wagon components. Its existing strategy also includes developing 25-tonne high-axle-load wagon platforms and smart wagon-monitoring systems.
With the VNICTT collaboration, Oriental Rail is seeking to move further into specialised, higher-capacity freight equipment while leveraging international engineering expertise for the Indian market.
The agreement is therefore positioned as a strategic technology-development initiative rather than an immediate wagon supply contract, with future commercial deployment dependent on design development, testing and the applicable railway approvals.
