Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with the Netherlands, with a focus on expanding trade and investment, enhancing maritime logistics cooperation and improving supply chain connectivity.

During his visit to the Netherlands, Goyal toured the Port of Rotterdam, accompanied by its Chief Executive Officer, Boudewijn Siemons. Discussions focused on port-led growth, logistics efficiency, international trade and opportunities to deepen cooperation between India and the Netherlands.

Highlighting Rotterdam’s strategic importance as a gateway for Indian goods entering European markets, Goyal said the port could play a significant role in strengthening India-Europe trade flows and global supply chains.

The Minister noted that India’s ongoing efforts to modernise existing ports and develop state-of-the-art maritime infrastructure offered considerable scope for collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam. He emphasised the potential to leverage the Dutch port’s expertise to improve logistics performance, enhance connectivity and unlock new opportunities for trade and investment.

The visit also underscored the Netherlands’ importance as a key entry point to Europe, particularly in the context of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement is expected to create fresh opportunities for Indian exporters, with the Netherlands’ advanced port facilities, logistics infrastructure and extensive European connectivity positioned to support increased trade volumes.

As India and Europe seek to deepen economic integration, stronger cooperation in maritime transport and logistics could help improve cargo movement, strengthen supply chain resilience and facilitate greater access to European markets for Indian businesses.

Goyal’s programme also included an interaction with the Indian community in Amsterdam, hosted by the Embassy of India at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Approximately 70 participants, including business leaders and professionals, attended the gathering.

The interaction highlighted the Indian diaspora’s role in strengthening bilateral economic, cultural and people-to-people ties. It also provided an opportunity to discuss prospects for closer collaboration across maritime logistics and other areas of mutual interest.

The Minister’s engagements in Rotterdam and Amsterdam reinforced India’s focus on expanding its economic partnership with the Netherlands, leveraging maritime infrastructure and logistics expertise to support trade growth and strengthen commercial links between India and Europe.
