The Port of Barcelona and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) have signed an agreement to intensify the connections between both ports and share knowledge in the areas of digitalisation, standardisation, and decarbonisation of maritime transport.

Signed by José Alberto Carbonell (President, Port of Barcelona) and Song Xiaodong (President, SIPG), the deal was part of a joint visit to the Port of Shanghai by Catalan leaders, including President Salvador Illa.

The agreement aims to enhance port and maritime services between Barcelona and Shanghai.

It focuses on developing smart port solutions, advancing digitalisation and decarbonisation, sharing best practices, improving security, and launching joint training programmes in port operations and management.

Both ports have committed to developing a Green Shipping and Digital Corridor between the ports of Shanghai and Barcelona, which will cover maritime routes using ships powered by green energy, and developing the capacities and regulations to supply such fuels in both ports, offering emissions-neutral maritime services between the Far East and the Mediterranean.

The ports also agreed to set up a bilateral working group to define priorities and specific projects, developing specific agreements for each initiative.

Last month, the Port of Barcelona Management Board approved four significant agreements aimed at enhancing port competitiveness, logistics development, sustainability, and the modernisation of facilities.
