The movement of Jammu & Kashmir cherries by rail has opened a new logistics route for one of India’s key horticulture products, providing growers and traders with a faster and more reliable transportation option to reach markets across the country.

A shipment of around 250 tonnes of cherries was transported through the rail network, marking an important milestone in strengthening the region’s agricultural supply chain. The initiative is expected to improve connectivity between cherry-producing areas in Jammu & Kashmir and major consumption centres, while reducing dependence on traditional road-based transport.

The introduction of rail-based movement is aimed at improving the efficiency of fresh fruit distribution by offering greater capacity, better scheduling, and more predictable transit options. For highly perishable products such as cherries, improved logistics can help reduce delays, minimize losses, and maintain product quality during transportation.

The development is also expected to benefit local farmers and orchard owners by providing wider market access and supporting better price realization. Improved freight connectivity can help small and medium growers participate more effectively in larger domestic supply chains.

The move aligns with India’s broader push toward multimodal logistics, where rail, road, and other transport networks are integrated to create more efficient supply chains. Expanding rail freight for agricultural products is seen as a key step toward strengthening India’s cold chain infrastructure and supporting growth in the agriculture export sector.

With increasing focus on logistics modernization, Jammu & Kashmir’s fruit industry is expected to gain from improved transportation options, helping regional produce reach markets more efficiently.
