Relocating the proposed marina project from the Gateway of India to Princess Dock is not feasible owing to its fishing business and Ro-Ro ferry service to Mandwa, Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) chief executive officer Pradeep P said on Tuesday.
“Fishing boats are always anchored at Princess Dock, and the Ro-Ro ferry service operates from here to Mandwa. Moreover, Princess Dock is under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Port Authority,” Pradeep said at a meeting to discuss the project called by assembly Speaker and Colaba MLA Rahul Narwekar. Pradeep further pointed out that there is poor transport connectivity, including BEST bus services, at Princess Dock.
When Narwekar asked whether heritage committee has given permission for the project at the Gateway, Pradeep said MMB has received approval from the archaeological department, and if the heritage committee nod is required, it will also be taken.
Ports minister Nitesh Rane suggested that the project be fully explained to the local residents who are opposing it and gave instructions to hold a joint meeting with them.
Colaba residents and resident groups, including Strand Marg Association, My Dream Colaba , Colaba ALM, and Old Cuffe Parade Association, have opposed the proposed Marina at the Gateway of India and suggested that it be relocated to Princess Dock.
Existing tourist movement at the Gateway leads to jammed roads and traffic, said residents , and pointed out that Marina can lead to loss of iconic views for Taj Mahal Hotel too.
After Narwekar pointed out that there could be traffic congestion at Gateway when the marina come up, Rane gave instructions for conducting a traffic simulation study and directed officials to discuss with BMC about possible traffic diversions.
