Sri Lanka’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAASL) has granted a Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC) to Ukraine-based Supernova Airlines, authorising the carrier to operate non-scheduled cargo flights to Colombo using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The approval is expected to strengthen air freight connectivity between Ukraine and Sri Lanka.
The certificate was formally presented by Daminda Rambukwella, Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer of CAASL, to Tinesh Guneshkumaran, Accountable Manager of Supernova Airlines.
The certification process involved an assessment of the airline’s operational, technical and organisational capabilities to ensure compliance with Sri Lanka’s aviation regulations and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) standards and recommended practices.
The clearance provides Supernova Airlines with an opportunity to expand its international cargo operations and establish additional air freight links with Sri Lanka. Non-scheduled services can offer flexibility in meeting specific cargo requirements, depending on demand and operational arrangements.
For Sri Lanka, the approval supports efforts to strengthen Colombo’s air cargo connectivity and develop the country’s aviation and logistics sectors. Improved international freight links can help facilitate trade and provide businesses with additional transportation options.
CAASL said it would continue to facilitate international air transport while ensuring that foreign operators comply with applicable regulatory requirements and aviation safety standards.
The approval marks a further step in expanding international cargo connectivity, although the commencement and frequency of Supernova Airlines’ services will depend on its operational plans and market demand.
