    Trichy railway division has surpassed 10 million tonnes in freight loading for the third consecutive year. This achievement was completed in 257 days on Dec 13 in the ongoing financial year (2024-25). A subsequent revenue of 544.8 crore was generated through freight operations. The same target was achieved in 265 days in the previous financial year (2023-24).

    Between April 1 and Dec 13, 2023, the division handled 9.7 million tonnes of freight. During the corresponding period (April 1 to Dec 13, 2024), the division surpassed handling 10 million tonnes of freight. Overall, the division recorded a 3% growth in freight loading, compared to last year.

    Loading of coal witnessed a 4% increase, with 7.8 million tonnes loaded and transported by the division. Food grains (0.8 million tonnes) and cement (0.5 million tonnes) were the second and third largest commodities handled respectively. With 0.4 million tonnes of iron ore handled, Trichy division recorded 135% growth in handling the iron ore compared to last financial year, indicating a sharp rise in handling the particular commodity.

    Officials said that the coal handling has given the division the highest freight revenue at 412.3 crore. Food grains and iron ore freight have fetched 43.5 crore and 35.5 crore, respectively.
