Vizhinjam Port has received approval to resume international crew change operations after a gap of four years. The permission comes following the issuance of a government order allowing crew change activities at all Indian ports equipped with outer anchorage facilities.
The approval has been granted with several revised guidelines, including regulations related to security, operational timelines, and applicable fees. Officials expect the resumption of crew change operations to generate significant additional revenue for the State Government.
One of Vizhinjam’s major advantages is its close proximity to an international airport, making it one of the most convenient ports in India for crew transfer operations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when several ports across the country were closed or operating under severe restrictions, Vizhinjam emerged as a key hub for international crew changes. Shipping agencies from around the world brought vessels to Vizhinjam for crew replacement. Tug boats were used to transport seafarers between vessels anchored offshore and the port.
Between 2020 and 2022, a total of 736 mother vessels and supertankers called at Vizhinjam for crew change operations. During this period, the Kerala Government accorded Vizhinjam the status of an International Crew Change and Bunkering Port, enabling over 12,500 seafarers to complete crew changes within two years.
However, the operations were later suspended due to legal and regulatory issues. With the latest approval, port authorities are optimistic that crew change services will not only strengthen Vizhinjam’s position as a global maritime hub but also provide a substantial new source of revenue alongside regular port operations.
