Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) has identified an alternative 20-acre site near Amaravila, south of Udiyankulangara, for the Central Warehousing Corporation’s (CWC) proposed logistics park and warehouse, following strong opposition from local residents to the earlier location.
The newly identified parcel has a relatively lower population density and is located close to a railway line, making it a potential fit for the proposed logistics facility. VISL had previously been examining land near the railway bridge at Udiyankulangara.
“We decided to look for an alternative site a little further south following the protests at Udiyankulangara,” a senior official associated with the project said.
The earlier proposal faced resistance from residents, who claimed that around 500 houses were located in and around the proposed project area. They expressed concerns that land acquisition could lead to the displacement of families. An action council was formed to oppose the project, with the local CPM unit also supporting the agitation.
The protests prompted the authorities to reconsider the original location and explore alternatives that could accommodate the proposed facility while addressing local concerns.
The CWC logistics park is envisaged as part of the supporting infrastructure being developed in the hinterland of Vizhinjam International Seaport. The facility is expected to support cargo storage, movement and handling as port-related logistics demand expands.
VISL has been coordinating the identification of suitable land for the warehousing corporation. The proposed facility forms part of a broader logistics ecosystem planned around Vizhinjam, which includes warehouses, container freight stations and multimodal logistics facilities.
The development of such infrastructure is considered important to improving cargo evacuation, strengthening hinterland connectivity and enabling the port to handle growing cargo volumes more efficiently. The proposed shift to the Amaravila site could help advance the project, subject to further evaluation and the necessary approvals.
