Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to commence export-import (EXIM) operations from August 18, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen its position on the global maritime trade map.
The start of EXIM operations is expected to expand the port’s role beyond transshipment and provide exporters and importers with a new gateway for handling international cargo. The development could help reduce logistics costs and improve connectivity for businesses in Kerala and neighbouring states.
Vizhinjam’s strategic location close to major international shipping routes gives it an advantage in attracting large container vessels and connecting Indian cargo with global markets. The port’s deep-water infrastructure is also designed to support the handling of some of the world’s largest container ships.
The commencement of EXIM services is expected to benefit sectors including manufacturing, seafood, agriculture, textiles and other export-oriented industries by providing an additional maritime gateway.
The development could also generate opportunities for logistics, warehousing, freight forwarding and other supporting industries in and around the port. With EXIM operations now set to begin, Vizhinjam is expected to play an increasingly important role in Kerala’s trade and logistics ecosystem.
