The VOC Port Authority in Thoothukudi has partnered with AM Green to develop a green ammonia bunkering hub, marking a significant step in India’s efforts to build a sustainable maritime fuel ecosystem. The collaboration aims to position the port as a key refueling destination for vessels using low-carbon fuels, while supporting the global shipping industry’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
Under the agreement, the two entities will explore the development of infrastructure for the storage, handling and supply of green ammonia at the port. The project is expected to leverage Thoothukudi’s strategic location along major international shipping routes, enhancing its role as an emerging hub for green maritime fuels in the Indian Ocean region.
Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy, is increasingly being viewed as a viable alternative fuel for the shipping sector as it seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and comply with stricter environmental regulations. By facilitating bunkering services for ammonia-powered vessels, the initiative is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global green shipping value chain.
The partnership also aligns with the Government of India’s broader objectives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to promote the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia. Developing bunkering infrastructure at major ports is considered a critical component in creating demand and supporting the adoption of alternative marine fuels.
For VOC Port, the alliance represents an opportunity to diversify its services, attract future-ready shipping lines and support industrial investments linked to the green energy sector. As the maritime industry accelerates its decarbonization efforts, the proposed green ammonia hub could play a vital role in establishing Thoothukudi as a leading center for sustainable shipping operations in South Asia.
