The West Bengal government has intensified efforts to rebuild its relationship with the Tata Group, with senior officials engaging in discussions aimed at resolving long-pending disputes and encouraging fresh investments in the state.

According to Commerce and Industry Minister Tapas Roy, the state is making all-round efforts to facilitate the Tata Group’s return to West Bengal in a significant way. He said a senior bureaucrat recently traveled to Mumbai to hold discussions with Tata Group leadership, while adding that he himself may also visit Mumbai if directed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

“The Tata Group has multiple businesses beyond Tata Motors, and the Chief Minister is personally leading the initiative,” Roy said, indicating the government’s broader strategy to attract investments across various sectors.

The development coincides with proceedings before the Calcutta High Court, where legal disputes between Tata Motors and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) came up for hearing on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Advocate General Surojit Nath Mitra sought an adjournment of all matters, informing the court that discussions had taken place, though without revealing further details. Tata Motors did not oppose the request for adjournment but requested that the court refrain from making any reference to settlement negotiations. Accepting the joint request, Justice Aniruddha Roy adjourned all related matters.

Industry observers believe the discussions could pave the way for a comprehensive settlement, potentially involving financial compensation to Tata Motors while also creating opportunities for the Tata Group to expand its presence in West Bengal through new projects.

The renewed engagement is seen as a significant step toward overcoming the legacy of the Singur controversy, which led to Tata Motors’ withdrawal of its Nano car project from the state in 2008. A successful resolution could mark a fresh chapter in West Bengal’s industrial development and investment climate.
