Western Railway’s Ahmedabad Division has awarded a 35-year contract to Emirates Logistics India Private Limited to develop a new cargo terminal at Khakharechi on 80,413 square metres of railway land under the Railway Board’s Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (GCT) Policy 2026.

The project marks the first cargo terminal in the Ahmedabad Division to be developed under Schedule-II of the policy. The terminal will be developed through private investment and will feature modern cargo loading and unloading facilities, without requiring capital investment from Indian Railways.

The project is expected to generate annual land licence fees of more than ₹15 lakh for the Railways, in addition to revenue-sharing earnings.

The development comes as the Ahmedabad Division’s eight operational Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals handled more than 23 lakh tonnes of freight between April and October 2026, generating over ₹330 crore in revenue. During the period, more than 1,700 rakes, comprising over 65,000 wagons, were loaded.

Commodities handled included containers, salt, bentonite, cement, fertilisers, sugar and pulses.

Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash said the new terminal would strengthen regional freight infrastructure, provide industries and commercial establishments with improved cargo transportation options, and encourage greater use of rail-based logistics.

The initiative is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at improving transport connectivity, expanding logistics infrastructure and promoting an integrated, more sustainable freight transportation network.
