DP World, in partnership with Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI), has announced the completion of major infrastructure upgrades at Manila South Harbour (MSH) in the Philippines.
The developments, representing a $100 million investment, are set to bolster the country’s trade capacity and regional economic integration.
The projects include the extension of Pier 3’s berth to over 600 metres, expanded yard capacity for an additional 20,000 TEUs, the deployment of two new neo post-panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, and the acquisition of eco-friendly landside handling equipment.
As a result, MSH’s annual throughput capacity has increased by over 25 per cent, reaching nearly two million TEUs, enabling the terminal to handle larger vessels and increasing cargo volumes.
DP World Group Chairman and CEO, His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, remarked: “DP World is honoured to be partnering with the Philippine government in modernising and advancing its critical trade infrastructure. Investment in ports and logistics brings greater value down the value chain and prosperity to communities.”
The new STS cranes, among the largest ever deployed in the Philippines, have a 58-metre outreach and can handle vessels up to 20 containers wide. They are equipped with advanced safety and automation features, including intelligent monitoring systems and automated diagnostics.
Echoing the commitment to sustainability, plans are underway to deploy electric and hybrid equipment across the terminal, including yard tractors and RTG cranes.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Department of Transportation Secretary Hon. Vince Dizon said: “The modernisation projects at MSH are a testament to the long-standing private-public-partnership to enhance the country’s trade facilities and capabilities.”
ATI handled nearly 1.6 million TEUs in 2024, with MSH accounting for 1.3 million TEUs—an 8 per cent increase year-on-year. In Q1 2025 alone, MSH processed over 350,000 TEUs, marking a 25 per cent jump from the same period in 2024.
This update comes amid another key development in the Philippines, as the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship facility of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), moves forward with the construction of Berth 8. The new berth is designed to handle ultra-large container vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs and will contribute an additional 200,000 TEUs in capacity.
