Banana exports from Burhanpur, constituting approximately 15 per cent of India’s total production, are expected to increase from the previous year. Rainfall activity in the summer has raised hopes of higher production and increased enquiries from exporters. In the financial year 2024–25, banana exports from Burhanpur were approximately 70,000 MT, according to official figures.Favourable summer rains created ideal weather conditions in banana-growing regions, raising hopes of higher yields across the region. Farmers began harvesting, and peak arrivals are expected to commence in June, according to local growers and traders.
“Export enquiries are good and much higher than the previous season. This is because banana production is likely to go up across all cultivating regions in this district. The weather remained favourable, and this will boost the yield and quality,” said Raghunath Patil, a banana farmer from Burhanpur. Currently, Burhanpur is seeing daily arrivals of nearly 140 truckloads of bananas, with each truck carrying between 20 and 30 tonnes. The surge in supply is matched by a rise in demand from domestic markets and overseas buyers.In the financial year 2024–25, the total production in the region crossed 17 lakh MT, according to official numbers. “Many local farmers in this district have started exporting on their own because the market is lucrative. Domestic demand has also jumped, mainly from Gujarat, Punjab, and other northern states,” said an official from the horticulture department in Burhanpur. “I am receiving encouraging enquiries from exporters this season. With such high-quality produce and consistent supply, we expect a much better year for exports,” said a Burhanpur-based trader. The primary transit points for bananas from MP are Burhanpur, Khandwa, Dhar, and Barwani.
