Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Shipbuilding Technology on the university campus.

CSL will provide ₹3.53 crore towards the initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between the shipbuilding industry and academia. The centre will focus on software development, skill enhancement, upskilling, and digitisation in the maritime sector.

According to CUSAT, the Centre will be equipped with advanced computing facilities and marine software to facilitate research in naval architecture, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and allied areas, thereby fostering innovation in ship design, shipbuilding, and advanced ship analysis.

The MoU was handed over by CSL Managing Director Madhu S Nair to CUSAT Vice Chancellor Dr. M. Junaid Bushiri at a function on Friday. The agreement was formally signed by Registrar Dr. Arun A U.

For CSR fund management and implementation, the Vice Chancellor has nominated Dr. Satheesh Babu P K, Associate Professor, Department of Ship Technology, as coordinator, with Assistant Professors Dr. Manoj T Issac and Dr. Rajesh P Nair as assistant coordinators.

Senior officials from both CSL and CUSAT were present at the signing ceremony.
