The Port of Barcelona has launched a public tender process to develop and operate a new multipurpose terminal, aiming to expand its capacity for handling diverse cargo streams and strengthen its role as a Mediterranean logistics hub.

The concession will cover the design, construction and long-term operation of the facility, which is expected to handle a mix of breakbulk, project cargo, ro-ro and other non-containerised freight. Port authorities said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to diversify cargo activity and enhance value-added services within the port estate.

Officials noted that the new terminal will be equipped with modern cargo-handling infrastructure and sustainable technologies to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The project is also intended to attract fresh private investment and boost employment in the surrounding logistics cluster.

Interested operators have been invited to submit proposals outlining technical capabilities, investment commitments and operational plans. The selection process will evaluate financial strength, experience in managing multi-cargo facilities and alignment with the port’s sustainability goals.

By opening the tender, the Port of Barcelona aims to reinforce its competitive positioning in southern Europe and capture growing demand for flexible, multipurpose cargo handling solutions across regional and international trade routes.
