In a significant boost to India’s maritime manufacturing sector, ECHT Marine has signed a landmark agreement with Artson and Malabar Cements Ltd for the joint development of a new shipbuilding unit at Willingdon Island, Kochi.

The collaboration marks a major milestone in ECHT Marine’s growth journey and underscores its commitment to strengthening India’s maritime capabilities through indigenous shipbuilding and marine infrastructure development.

The proposed venture, operating under the banner of ECHT Marine–Artson Malabar Joint Venture, aims to combine the expertise of all three partners to develop a modern shipbuilding facility capable of serving diverse segments of the maritime industry.

According to the company, the new shipbuilding unit will focus on four key sectors:

    • Defence: Development of advanced and indigenous maritime platforms to support India’s defence preparedness.
    • Water Mobility: Construction of sustainable water metro and urban water transport solutions for smart cities.
    • Port Transport: Building tugboats and support vessels to strengthen port and harbour operations.
    • Tourism: Development of world-class passenger and leisure vessels to promote coastal and inland water tourism.

Industry observers view the project as a significant step towards enhancing domestic shipbuilding capacity and supporting the Government of India’s vision of self-reliance in the maritime sector.

The agreement also reflects ECHT Marine’s rapid expansion within the maritime industry. Having established capabilities in manufacturing floating jetties, leisure boats and marine infrastructure, the company is now moving into large-scale shipyard development in partnership with a Tata enterprise.

The upcoming facility at Willingdon Island is expected to create new opportunities for ship construction, vessel maintenance, employment generation and technological advancement, further strengthening Kochi’s position as one of India’s leading maritime hubs.

With growing demand for defence vessels, green water transport solutions, port support craft and tourism-related maritime infrastructure, the joint venture is poised to play a key role in supporting the evolution of India’s maritime ecosystem.
