The Port of Gioia Tauro has launched a tender for channel dredging works aimed at enhancing navigational access and strengthening the port’s capacity to accommodate larger container vessels. The project forms part of the port’s ongoing infrastructure development programme to improve operational efficiency and reinforce its role as a leading Mediterranean transshipment hub.

The dredging works are expected to deepen and maintain key navigation channels, ensuring safe vessel movements and supporting the growing demand for handling next-generation ultra-large container ships. Once completed, the project will improve berth accessibility, reduce navigational constraints and increase the port’s overall competitiveness.

Port authorities have invited qualified contractors to participate in the tender process, with the project expected to be carried out in line with environmental and maritime safety regulations. The selected contractor will undertake dredging activities designed to optimise channel depth while minimising environmental impacts through appropriate mitigation measures.

The investment reflects the Port of Gioia Tauro’s long-term strategy to expand infrastructure, attract additional shipping services and strengthen its position within global container trade. Enhanced channel capacity is expected to support higher cargo volumes, improve turnaround times and reinforce the port’s importance as a key gateway for Mediterranean and international shipping routes.
