Maersk has increased fuel-related surcharges in response to higher fuel costs linked to the ongoing situation in the Middle East. The carrier has moved to more frequent reviews of its fuel surcharge as market conditions remain volatile.
The revised mechanism allows Maersk to review surcharge levels weekly rather than monthly, with adjustments based on changes in fuel costs. The carrier said the measure will remain in place for as long as necessary to cover higher operating expenses.
In Greece, for example, Maersk raised the truck fuel surcharge to 12.5% from August 24, up from 7.5% previously. Similar fuel-related adjustments have been introduced across other European markets as fuel costs remain elevated.
Maersk has also implemented emergency fuel and energy surcharges for inland shipments in parts of Northern Europe, citing disruptions to fuel supplies arising from the Middle East situation.
The latest adjustments are expected to increase transportation costs for shippers as carriers continue to respond to fuel-price volatility and higher operating expenses across their networks.
