Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on Thursday announced plans to commence operations of a dedicated Empty Container Yard (ECY) with integrated warehousing at Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone, aimed at streamlining empty container handling and improving services for shipping lines and customers.
The facility will provide end-to-end services across the empty container lifecycle, including storage, maintenance, inspection and movement of containers to exporters and Container Freight Stations (CFSs).
APSEZ said bringing empty container operations within the Mundra Port SEZ will help improve safety, security and regulatory compliance while enabling faster turnaround times and better utilisation of logistics infrastructure. The initiative is also expected to reduce unnecessary container movements and optimise logistics costs.
According to APSEZ, the company accounted for 45.5% of India’s container market in FY26, while Mundra Port alone handled nearly 35% of the country’s container trade, making it India’s largest container-handling port.
Mundra currently handles an estimated 1.6 million TEUs of empty containers annually, playing a critical role in supporting India’s import-export supply chains.
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer, APSEZ, said the dedicated ECY, to be operated by APSEZ and/or its partners, would enhance efficiency across the container ecosystem.
“The dedicated Empty Container Yard at Mundra to be operated by APSEZ and/or partners will enhance efficiency across the container ecosystem by enabling faster turnaround times, reducing unnecessary container movements, and optimising logistics costs,” Gupta said.
He added that strengthening trade-enabling infrastructure remains central to APSEZ’s commitment to supporting India’s economic growth and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
The initiative is aligned with the government’s focus on developing efficient, technology-enabled logistics systems and improving the ease of doing business. The facility is also expected to facilitate closer coordination among Customs authorities, shipping lines, terminal operators and transporters.
APSEZ said the ECY would further strengthen Mundra’s position as a key gateway for India’s international trade and support the country’s growing containerised trade requirements.
