Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off a bulk tiles train from Western Carriers (India) Limited’s (WCIL) Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (WCGD) at Devaliya in Morbi, Gujarat, marking the commencement of full commercial operations at the multimodal logistics facility.
Spread across 42 acres, the terminal is designed to handle cargo through both rail and road modes, with facilities for container rakes and wagon rakes. The facility is strategically positioned to serve the industrial clusters of Morbi and the wider Saurashtra region.
The terminal is expected to support the logistics requirements of the ceramics and tiles, salt, chemicals, agriculture, fertiliser and MSME sectors. Morbi is one of India’s major ceramic manufacturing hubs, while the Maliya belt is a significant salt-producing region.
The commissioning of the Morbi terminal follows WCIL’s recent inauguration of its General Cargo Terminal at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System, operated by the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority. Developed and operated by WCIL under a 15-year agreement with SMPA, the Kolkata facility handles dry bulk, break-bulk and containerised cargo.
Together, the Morbi and Kolkata facilities expand WCIL’s rail-linked logistics network along India’s East-West freight corridor, providing integrated cargo movement solutions for industrial customers.
Commenting on the occasion, Rajendra Sethia, Chairman & Managing Director, Western Carriers (India) Limited, said the Morbi terminal would serve as a logistics backbone for the region’s salt, ceramics and other key industries, while supporting the company’s focus on integrated and scalable logistics infrastructure.
The terminal is aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which seeks to improve multimodal connectivity and enhance the efficiency of India’s logistics network.
WCIL plans to further expand the Morbi facility with inland container depot and warehousing infrastructure, strengthening its role as a logistics hub connecting Gujarat’s industrial centres with markets across India.
