Japanese logistics major NX Group, formerly Nippon Express, is targeting $380 million in revenue over the next two years as it expands its presence in India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.
Katsuhito Kobayashi, CEO of NX Group’s South Asia and Oceania region, said the company will establish a dedicated semiconductor logistics facility in Gujarat in 2027. The expansion will take its Indian network to 113 locations and 67 warehouses across 39 cities.
NX Group currently handles sensitive automotive and pharmaceutical cargo in India and plans to leverage its semiconductor logistics experience in Japan and other markets to support existing chip packaging facilities and upcoming semiconductor manufacturing projects.
“Semiconductor logistics is very sensitive and complicated, but that gives us more of an opportunity,” Kobayashi said, adding that the business will cover not only transportation of semiconductor chips but also the movement of manufacturing equipment, materials and specialised chemicals.
The company’s services will include transportation of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and precision components, customs clearance, warehousing, factory delivery, in-factory logistics, installation and distribution. It will also offer vibration- and shock-controlled transportation, temperature and humidity management, and cleanroom delivery for sensitive semiconductor equipment.
NX Group plans to train its existing 900-strong workforce in India for semiconductor logistics rather than relying solely on new recruitment. Some employees have already undergone training and on-the-job programmes in Japan. Over the next two to three years, the company aims to develop five specialised leaders across five major Indian cities to train additional personnel.
Kobayashi said logistics costs in India remain relatively higher than in some other regions, but expects the development of supporting infrastructure alongside new semiconductor facilities to help reduce overall freight costs as the industry scales up.
Headquartered in Tokyo, NX Group operates across transportation, freight, warehousing and supply chain management. The company has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the India Semiconductor Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to support the development of semiconductor logistics infrastructure and strengthen supply chains in India.
