South Western Railway (SWR) recorded a 5.9% increase in freight loading in September, handling 4.41 million tonnes of goods during the month.

The growth reflects continued demand for rail-based freight transportation across the zone, with commodities moving through its network supporting industrial and commercial activity in the region.

The increase in loading highlights the role of railways in transporting bulk and other commodities over long distances while providing an alternative to road-based logistics. Higher freight volumes also contribute to improved utilisation of railway infrastructure and rolling stock.

South Western Railway serves important industrial and commercial centres across Karnataka, parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, connecting production and consumption markets with major ports and other freight corridors.

The zone has been focusing on improving freight operations, enhancing terminal infrastructure and facilitating smoother movement of goods. Better connectivity and operational efficiency can help attract additional cargo to rail, particularly for bulk commodities and long-distance shipments.

The September performance comes amid the Indian Railways’ broader efforts to increase freight volumes and strengthen its logistics role. Sustained growth in freight loading could support higher railway revenues while helping businesses manage transportation costs and supply-chain requirements.
