The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) reported that another CMA CGM vessel had lost containers overboard while sailing off the east coast of South Africa. On August 16, CMA CGM BELEM encountered adverse weather off the coast of Richard Bay that caused a stow collapse and resulted in the loss of 99 containers in the sea.
Initially, in the severe weather, the containership took shelter at Maputo Bay, located southwest of Mozambique. Later, after assessing the situation, the authorities redirected the Malta-flagged containership towards the Qheberha, formerly known as Elizabeth Port.
Meanwhile, SAMSA requested the vessels passing through the area to report any sighting of lost containers from CMA CGM BELEM to the appropriate authorities by contacting the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.
Earlier, on July 09, CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN lost 40 containers in the same region of the South African and Indian Ocean. The search for the lost containers of the CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN is still ongoing.
