A.P. Moller Capital has agreed to acquire Singapore-based port terminal operator Portek International from Japanese trading company Mitsui & Co for an undisclosed sum, expanding its global port and logistics portfolio.
Portek has interests in seven ports across Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta and Vietnam. The company also provides port engineering, operations and maintenance services. Its terminals handle approximately 700,000 containers, 7 million tonnes of bulk cargo and 90,000 vehicles annually, supported by a workforce of around 1,400 employees.
Mitsui acquired Portek in 2011 for $180 million after outbidding Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI). Since then, Mitsui has invested in modernising the company’s operations, including the introduction of a new terminal operating system at Riga Universal Terminal in 2025.
Further investments are expected to support infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements across Portek’s network. Valletta Gateway Terminals in Malta is pursuing shore power facilities and equipment upgrades, while Gabon’s port authority has called for additional investment at Port-Gentil.
A.P. Moller Capital plans to strengthen Portek’s operational performance and reduce emissions, aligning the acquisition with its active ownership strategy. The transaction also adds to the investment firm’s recent port-sector acquisitions, including majority stakes in Euroports Group and Globex Investments.
The acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
