In a landmark moment for India’s clean energy and logistics sector, Adani Enterprises, the flagship of the Adani Group, has rolled out the country’s first hydrogen-powered truck for commercial mining operations, marking a decisive step toward decarbonising industrial transport.
The heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell truck, equipped with three hydrogen tanks and a range of 200 kilometres while carrying up to 40 tonnes of cargo, was deployed at the Gare Pelma III coal block in Chhattisgarh. The vehicle will operate in Adani’s logistics chain, ferrying coal to the state’s thermal power plant.
Unveiling the truck in Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called the initiative a “definitive pivot towards sustainability,” lauding the state’s lead role in advancing green industrial practices. The project is part of a broader initiative by Adani’s natural resources division to replace diesel-fuelled logistics with green hydrogen-powered alternatives.
The rollout is a collaboration between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both housed under Adani Enterprises. While ANR oversees mining operations, ANIL supplies the hydrogen cells, supporting the group’s vision of a vertically integrated clean energy ecosystem. ANIL is also active in wind, solar, and battery technologies.
“We are committed to decarbonisation and responsible mining. This initiative is a testament to our efforts to create low-impact, tech-enabled model mines,” said Dr. Vinay Prakash, CEO of Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises.
The Adani Group is also pioneering semi-autonomous dozer push technologies and tree transplanters as part of its sustainable mining model. The green hydrogen truck program aligns with India’s goals of reducing crude oil dependence, curbing emissions, and bolstering energy security.
Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, emits only water vapor and warm air when used as fuel, eliminating particulate and CO₂ emissions entirely. In a mining context, this is a game-changer in cutting diesel dependency, especially in remote operations.
This hydrogen truck initiative adds another chapter to Adani’s expanding green hydrogen ambition, which forms the backbone of its next-generation investments—alongside data centres, airports, and industrial materials. With this deployment, Adani becomes not just a miner but a miner for the clean energy age.
