Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has doubled the handling capacity of its Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) in Sri Lanka following an investment of around $750 million.
The expansion strengthens CWIT’s role as a major transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean and is expected to improve its ability to handle growing container volumes from India and other regional markets.
The increased capacity will enable the terminal to accommodate higher vessel and container traffic, supporting Colombo’s position as a key gateway for regional transshipment cargo.
CWIT is operated by a consortium involving APSEZ, John Keells Holdings and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The terminal forms part of APSEZ’s international port portfolio and provides connectivity to major global shipping routes.
The investment comes as container shipping lines continue to expand services across South Asia, while demand for efficient transshipment infrastructure grows with increasing trade volumes.
The expanded terminal is also expected to strengthen Colombo’s connectivity with Indian ports and provide additional capacity for cargo moving between South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and other international markets.
APSEZ has been expanding its international footprint as part of its strategy to build an integrated logistics network spanning ports, terminals and related supply-chain infrastructure.
The CWIT expansion is therefore positioned to support both Sri Lanka’s maritime ambitions and APSEZ’s broader strategy of increasing its presence in key global trade corridors.
