E-commerce, pharma, electronics exports drive demand as freighter operators add capacity to India

India’s air cargo sector is witnessing a surge in demand, with e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, electronics and engineering goods emerging as key growth drivers and prompting freighter operators to expand capacity on India-linked routes.

The increase in cargo movement comes amid stronger export activity and continuing disruptions caused by the West Asia crisis. Congestion at regional ports and higher ocean freight rates have encouraged exporters and logistics companies to increasingly look at air freight for time-sensitive and high-value shipments.

Freighter operators are responding by deploying additional capacity to India to tap the growing demand from export-oriented industries. The expansion is also being supported by the changing composition of India’s international trade, with electronics and other high-value manufactured products accounting for a growing share of shipments.

Over the past two months, several international airlines have strengthened their cargo operations to and from India. EgyptAir, Hong Kong Air Cargo and Qatar Airways have added cargo flights connecting India with key international gateways including Cairo, Doha, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

Foreign carriers have also operated additional flights on an ad hoc basis to meet rising business requirements and address capacity constraints in the market.

The increase in air cargo activity reflects a broader shift in logistics patterns as exporters seek alternatives to ocean transportation amid higher freight costs, port congestion and uncertainty surrounding shipping routes in the region.

E-commerce is another important contributor to the growth in air freight demand. The sector requires faster delivery times and has increasingly relied on air cargo for international shipments, particularly for high-value and time-sensitive products.

Pharmaceutical exports are also generating sustained demand, given the need for reliable and time-bound transportation of medicines and healthcare products. At the same time, India’s expanding electronics manufacturing and export ecosystem is creating additional requirements for rapid international connectivity.

The combination of export growth, changing cargo profiles and disruptions to conventional maritime routes is therefore giving a fresh boost to India’s air freight market.

Industry demand is expected to remain strong as exporters continue to diversify transportation options and carriers assess opportunities to add scheduled and supplementary freighter capacity on India’s international trade lanes.
