The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has used AllRead’s OCR software to improve traceability at 22 road checkpoints and two railway crossings at the port.
The collaboration with AllRead began in 2020 under APBA’s ‘Journey of Innovation’ programme.
Due to AllRead’s computer vision solution, the APBA expands real-time monitoring and supervision of the port’s traffic without interruptions in the flow of vehicles and goods.
This system uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to interpret pictures from video surveillance cameras, collecting critical information such as waggon and container numbers , licence plates, and vehicle types before integrating it into the port’s information management system.
The Port of Algeciras’ location and high volume of vehicles from many sources and destinations, particularly the Maghreb, make identifying automobiles and goods difficult.
This innovative system intends to automatically detect licence plates of light and heavy vehicles in real time, including European and Moroccan automobiles, trailers, maritime containers, and railroad waggons.

AllRead’s solution allows us to obtain very accurate data with very reasonable infrastructure requirements.”
Adriaan Landman, Chief Operations Officer at AllRead, stated: “Our lightweight and accurate solution enables a deployment of this scale without a financial burden for the port.”
In April, the Port of Algeciras recorded a container throughput of 1.17 million TEU at its two terminals, reflecting a 4.6 per cent increase in Q1 2024.
