AM Green has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority to explore the development of a one million tonnes per annum (MTPA) green hydrogen-based ammonia plant at the port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The proposed project will encompass the production, handling, storage, and refuelling of green ammonia, positioning the port as a key export gateway for clean fuels to major markets across Europe and Asia.
The initiative marks another significant step in transforming Thoothukudi into a green energy hub. The port has already witnessed the commissioning of a 3,000-tonne green hydrogen facility in 2025, supported by an investment of approximately $52.3 million. Other ongoing sustainability projects at the port include a 750-metre e-methanol bunkering and refuelling pilot facility and a 9 MW wind power project.
The latest MoU comes as AM Green accelerates its global expansion plans. In January this year, the company commenced construction of a 1.5 MTPA green ammonia plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The project has already secured major offtake commitments from German energy companies Uniper and RWE, underscoring growing European demand for green fuels.
The development aligns closely with India’s ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to achieve five million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production by 2030. The mission also envisages the establishment of green hydrogen hubs at major ports and the retrofitting of two vessels to operate on green fuels by 2027.
To support the emerging green hydrogen ecosystem, the government has already awarded incentives for domestic production through long-term contracts covering 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia supply over a 10-year period.
The proposed AM Green project is expected to enhance India’s position as a global supplier of low-carbon fuels while reinforcing the strategic role of southern ports in the country’s energy transition and maritime decarbonisation efforts.
