APM Terminals (APMT) Maasvlakte II has announced a partnership with Konecranes for an Automated Horizontal Transport System, marking a key phase in its expansion to double terminal capacity by 2027.
The contract includes the procurement of up to 71 Lift Automated Guided Vehicles (Lift AGVs), expanding the system to over 140 Lift AGVs, along with a third battery exchange station and virtual reality simulation software.
These upgrades are aimed at elevating both the reliability and efficiency of operations.
This forms part of APMT’s plans to develop Maasvlakte II (MVII) as its largest fully automated terminal in Europe. Spanning 130 hectares, MVII will feature a 2,000-metre deep-sea quay and a 500-metre barge quay.

“With this follow-up order for an electrified automated transport system, we are laying a reliable foundation to meet our ambitious growth and CO2 reduction targets, and we can also serve our customers well at the expanded terminal.”
Konecranes will also provide integration, commissioning, and automation support to ensure the implementation.
A key feature of the delivery includes Konecranes’ CONTROLS Emulation software, a Digital Twin that offers real-time simulation of terminal operations.
Earlier this month, APMT MVII announced preparations to offer shore power for sea-going vessels by 2028 in an effort to make the Port of Rotterdam more sustainable.
