    The Port of Amsterdam has joined the TRANS2 initiative (Transition to a Climate-proof Rotterdam Hinterland TRANSport), a collaborative effort aimed at bolstering the resilience of inland shipping and transport systems.

    Coordinated by Deltares, the programme brings together 14 key partners, including the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Rijkswaterstaat, the Port of Rotterdam, and Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland.

    Together, the organisations are working to develop a comprehensive model for climate-resilient inland transport, advancing sustainability and operational continuity across the region’s supply chains.

    A group of specialists is envisioning fleet developments and transition routes, assessing how well a climate-resilient, future-proof fleet is taking shape, and identifying what’s needed to sustain or even enhance capacity and reliability.

    This collaboration is largely focused on improving grip in the face of changing climate, however, inland navigation has other significant issues.

    Climate-adaptive solutions are examined, if possible, with the Digital Twin Waterways and the System-Dynamic (SD) models.

    In November 2023, the Ports of Bilbao, Amsterdam and duisport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of an intra-European corridor for renewable hydrogen connecting end-to-end Spain, The Netherlands and Germany.
