APM Terminals (APMT) Pier 400 in the Port of Los Angeles has deployed two new fully electric automated straddle carriers alongside a retrofitted hybrid diesel auto-strad.

The hybrid diesel auto-strad at Pier 400 was transformed into a fully electric carrier by PCMC ILWO mechanics, with insights provided by OEM partner Kalmar.

This milestone makes Pier 400 one of the first terminals in North America to transition from a hybrid diesel auto-strad unit to fully electric.

“This retrofit demonstrates that, with collaboration and resolve, we can move closer to meeting our goals of expanding our fleet of zero-emission terminal assets,” shared APMT in a recent statement.

According to APMT, the newly launched units are delivering on expectations with zero tailpipe emissions and improved air quality for workers and local communities.

Just last month, APMT Pier 400 deployed the largest fleet of electric terminal tractors in the Port of Los Angeles, marking a notable step in its decarbonisation efforts while advancing the skills of the ILWU workforce. The ETTs were delivered with training coordinated in partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Orange EV and labour and maintenance partner Pacific Crane Maintenance Company.
