Assam has achieved a major milestone in its dairy sector with the launch of its first-ever dairy export shipment, as Purabi Ice Cream was flagged off for export to Bhutan. The consignment marks the entry of Assam’s dairy products into an international market and highlights the growing potential of the state’s milk processing industry.
The export initiative by Purabi Dairy aims to strengthen cross-border trade ties between India and Bhutan while creating new opportunities for dairy farmers and processors in Assam. The shipment is expected to enhance the visibility of locally produced dairy products and support the expansion of the region’s agricultural value chain.
Purabi Dairy, promoted by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd, has been working to improve milk procurement, processing capabilities and market access for dairy farmers across the state. The move into exports reflects efforts to diversify markets and increase value addition within Assam’s dairy ecosystem.
Bhutan was selected as the first overseas destination due to its geographical proximity and strong trade relationship with India. The export of Purabi Ice Cream is expected to pave the way for additional dairy product shipments, including other value-added items, as demand grows in neighbouring markets.
The milestone is seen as a boost for Assam’s dairy sector, aligning with broader national efforts to increase agricultural exports, promote farmer-led enterprises and expand India’s presence in global food markets.
