India’s rice exports recorded growth in the first half of 2026, supported by stronger demand for non-basmati varieties in international markets. Rice shipments during the January-June period increased by around 5% compared with the same period last year, according to industry sources.

The rise was mainly driven by higher exports of non-basmati rice, which gained traction in key overseas markets due to competitive pricing and steady demand from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Improved availability and India’s position as one of the world’s largest rice suppliers helped sustain export momentum.

Basmati rice exports remained an important segment, supported by demand from premium markets, while non-basmati shipments provided the major boost to overall volumes. Exporters said changing global supply conditions and demand shifts among major buyers contributed to higher purchases of Indian rice.

The growth comes despite challenges such as freight fluctuations, changing trade policies and competition from other rice-exporting countries. Industry players expect India’s rice exports to remain strong in the coming months, supported by stable production, expanded market access and continued demand for affordable food grains.
