Bangladesh and China have signed a $335 million agreement for the development of Mongla Port, one of Bangladesh’s key maritime gateways. The deal is aimed at strengthening port infrastructure and improving the country’s capacity to handle international trade and cargo traffic.
Located in southwestern Bangladesh, Mongla Port plays an important role in supporting the country’s export-import activities. Improvements to its infrastructure could help enhance cargo-handling efficiency, streamline port operations and strengthen connections with inland transport networks.
The agreement reflects continued cooperation between Bangladesh and China in infrastructure development. Chinese participation in port projects across the region has focused on upgrading maritime facilities, improving logistics connectivity and supporting growing trade requirements.
The project, titled Expansion and Modernisation of Mongla Port Facilities, will be implemented by the Mongla Port Authority under Bangladesh’s Ministry of Shipping. It includes two container terminals equipped with modern machinery, a container yard, a container delivery yard and a dedicated cargo-handling yard.
Financing terms and repayment
China’s Export-Import Bank will provide a concessional loan of approximately $335.78 million at an annual interest rate of 2%. The agreement allows a repayment period of 20 years, including a five-year grace period. The loan agreement was signed on October 10, 2026, by representatives of Bangladesh’s Economic Relations Division and China’s EXIM Bank.
The port modernisation is expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s container-handling infrastructure, improve cargo operations and support growing trade requirements. Once completed, the upgraded facilities could also enhance Mongla’s role in regional logistics and maritime connectivity.
